Microdiscectomy

Is Microdiscectomy Right for Me?

Dr. Alexander uses the microdiscectomy procedure to treat patients with degenerative disc disease, herniated discs and other spinal conditions. The procedure removes a damaged disc or a portion of a disc to help prevent nerve compression or any kind of pain that might be a result of the condition.

Using this minimally invasive procedure, only the damaged or bulging portion of the cervical disc is removed. During the procedure, a small incision is made in the surgical area. An endoscope or tiny camera is used to view the area, and minimally invasive surgical tools are navigated to the spine. The damaged parts of the vertebral disc are removed, while preserving the rest of the disc body.

Am I a Candidate for Microdiscectomy?

All surgical procedures, no matter how minimally invasive, come with risk. You should talk with your doctor about all of your options for treatment.

The microdiscectomy procedure does not require as much recovery time and or healing as with a traditional open surgery. Dr. Alexander’s patients often return to their daily life, work and activities more quickly and see improvements in their condition following surgery.
